First published in a slipcase set with folded sheets in 1997; this edition presents the materials in a single volume. Received the NSW Premier's Award for Book of the Year and Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-fiction in 1999. Part 1 looks at the sailor and his environment, the captain, the ship, scurvy and provisions, the ship's company, misfortune and peradventure. Part 2 describes the voyage, Botany Bay, Port Jackson, Sandy Cape, Endeavour Reef, and 'L'envoi'. Includes notes to part one, bibliography, and index of individuals and locations. Author has served for 18 years in the Australian Navy. His previous titles include 'Out of the Smoke' and 'The Sword and the Blossom'.
